From East To West

The last two and a half months have been an incredible period of change, growth, and planning for the future in all aspects of my life. I do apologise in advance for my apparent absence on the musical and internet fronts because I am still going through the process of adapting to new surroundings and opportunities.

As many of you know I have spent a lot of time between England and New York over the past four years, but at the end of June, all of that changed as I took a road trip cross country to explore California. The month of July was entirely spent setting up here and it was only at the end of the month that I was really ready make music and play with sound.

In getting used to my new sonic surroundings I have thrown myself at the sound design for David Diley’s film Of Shark And Man, around two thirds of which is now completed. I’m sure many of you have already seen the trailers for the film, but for those of you who haven’t, you can do here:

By working on the sound design for this film, rather than the music, I have actually learned a lot about myself and the way I actually “hear” things. What I mean by that, is I have found that I have approached manipulating location recordings and piecing elements together in an oddly similar fashion to how I put musical notes together – I am hearing the sound as a musical composition in its own right. At times it is quite unnerving, but by and large I feel that it has solidified many of my production techniques, as well as completely redefining and refining others.

My record label, Ishikawa Records, is slowly emerging out of its early, nebulous stage, and is now taking a serious form. I have teamed up with Mikey Donnelly of Epilogues, who is helping me to push Ishikawa forward as an entity of growth. We have some initial plans that need to be fleshed out, but we can’t wait to pen everything down and share the fruits of our labours with you.

So, as you can see, I have had many changes lately, and I am in the middle of projects that are going to be consuming a lot of my time over the coming months. I will try to check in more regularly, but for now I must get back to plotting and planning.

Stay tuned…
