Month: March 2013

Catch up…

Wow. What a start to the year! After two and a half months of powering into 2013, I am now in Connecticut, ready to get creative.

Looking back over the past couple of months is leaving me a little exhausted. As if jet lag wasn’t enough.

This year definitely started with a bang, working with AfternautDeny Thyself and Dale Jonathan Perkins to create the remix EP of “Over, Under”. Afternaut sent me his remix first, and I have to admit that I got a little addicted to it. He completely re-pitched my voice to turn the whole piece into a minor key. I got so addicted to it, that I actually forgot how to sing my own version of it, which meant some serious un-learning in rehearsals.

Dale Jonathan Perkins and Deny Thyself went down a very electroacoustic route, but both came up with pieces that couldn’t be more different from each other if they tried. Some of you will know that Dale was my MA mentor at Leeds College of Music. He had quite a profound influence on the way I approach electroacoustics, and so I found it rather frustrating to hear him using similar techniques as I would have chosen, but with pin point accuracy. I must work h-a-r-d-e-r!

I was very pleased to see that the vinyl went into the top 100 selling vinyls on Bandcamp on the release week, so thank you to all who supported me in buying a copy. It really does mean everything!

I have been speaking to David Diley from Scarlet View Mediafor about a year now, and we had discussed working together “at some point in the near future”. David has worked very closely with various aquatic conservation projects around the world and he has made quite a name for himself as an underwater film maker, with screenings of his work cropping up around the globe. When it came to releasing “Over, Under”, it was great to know that I could create a team to make the music video very quickly, and with some careful planning beforehand, we decided on a location and a concept for the visuals.

In mid-January, David, Stephanie Ward (set designer) and I took a stroll around what appeared to be Narnia:

After looking at the weather forecast, we knew that we only had a few days to prepare for the video. Just as the forecast had suggested, there was another big snowfall on the night before the shoot, and the day after the shoot it had pretty much all thawed.

On the day of the shoot, the weather’s wrath on the roads meant that a team of ten dwindled to just us three. To get from the car to the main location in the forest is a 1.5 mile walk. If it had been the middle of summer, then all would have been lovely, but there was over a foot of snow on the ground and we had two car loads of equipment to transport. As you can imagine, by the time we had everything in place, we were already fighting against the light!

Anyway, if you haven’t already seen it, now’s as good a time as any!

Thanks to those of you who came to the three shows I played in February and March. I had such a great time in Hampstead at SHHH… and I was really humbled to see so many faces, familiar and new, at the vinyl launch in York, alongside Bird.

Now that I’m getting reacquainted with my microphones I am ready to create more music, and I am proud to announce that I have been awarded a grant from the Musician’s Benevolent Fund to release my next single/EP in the summertime. I don’t want to give too much away right now, but I feel so honoured to have been selected as a recipient for the Emerging Excellence Award, and I’ll be putting it to good use…

In other news, I have been working with Antony Chorlerton on a piece of music to promote his Community Interest Company (which is currently going through a branding process). Without going into too much depth, the company is focused on promoting Life-First principles (not to be confused with any pro-choice/pro-life debates). Antony and I spent three days recording in Stratford Upon Avon, and we discussed, in great depth, the concept behind the company, as well as the issues that need to be addressed. If you want to help spread awareness of this cause, Antony has set up a pledge campaign online HERE. Don’t worry. No one’s asking for any money, it is simply a way of spreading the word!

More news on that one as it appears…

I think that’s more than enough for one bulletin, so tata for now everyone.
